  • The Bank of England is edging closer to cutting interest rates after two external members of the monetary policy committee voted for an immediate reduction from 0.75% to 0.5% this month.

  • Walt Disney beat Wall Street estimates for quarterly profit despite huge investments in the new streaming service Disney+.

  • Sainsbury’s profits plunged more than 90%, as the UK’s second largest grocer absorbs the £200m cost of closing 15 supermarkets and dozens of Argos stores.

  • The Co-operative Bank took a fresh £60m hit as a result of payment protection insurance mis-selling but said that many of its historical problems had been fixed.

  • RSA suffered an £8m hit for restructuring its British business as losses on large commercial policies took their toll.
